Autumn Term in Reception
Our classrooms are run together as a unit where the children can access the resources in both the indoor and outside areas. In Reception the learning is driven by the children's interests and we incorporate their areas of learning within this as well as a variety of experiences to support them. We visit the Woodland Walk every Thursday morning, please ensure your child has appropriate clothing in school, e.g. a waterproof coat and wellies.
This term we will be learning and practising some of the following skills:
Communication and Language: We will be learning to:
Listen in a group
Explain our ideas
Belonging: We will be thinking about ways to keep ourselves safe in school and thinking of ways to be kind to others.
Enjoying: We will be learning about how to be a good friend by inviting others to join in our games and sharing.
Succeeding: We will be learning to say what we are good at and think of things we would like to get better at. We will be learning to make good choices about how to use our learning time.
Trying: We will be learning to try new challenges and thinking of ways to help ourselves if we get stuck.
After half term we will have indoor PE every Friday.
We do Fidgety Fingers every day to help improve our fine motor skills.
We have access to a variety of equipment in our Reception playground to help strengthen our muscles and improve our spatial awareness, including: the climbing wall, wheeled vehicles and giant construction.
Literacy: Reading We will be learning to:
Recognise the front cover and the book title
Recognise letters and say the sound they make
Blend sounds to read words
Retell a familiar story
Answer questions about a familiar text
The children will have the opportunity to change their reading books on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by placing their books bags in the 'changing book box'. Reading diaries will be checked on Mondays to check for comments and to award house points. Reading books will be issued from week 4 and 5 once children have settled into school.
We have daily phonics sessions which follow the 'Letters and Sounds' phonics programme with elements of Read, Write Inc. to support their learning. There will be a virtual phonics information session on Tuesday 22nd September. One at 9am and one at 6pm for all parents to attend.
Literacy: Writing We will be learning to:
Hold our pencils correctly
Form our letters correctly
Say and write the first sound in a word, e.g. p for pig
Write simple words by segmenting the sounds in them, e.g. split cat into c-a-t
Spell some common words correctly
Use finger spaces to separate words
Maths: We will be learning to:
Count a group of objects by saying one number for each object
Recognise written numerals to 10, then 20
Compare groups of objects using the language of more, less, fewer and the same.
Say the number that is 1 more and 1 less than a given number
Add 2 numbers by counting objects.
Recognise, name and describe 2D shapes
Compare the height, length and weight of different objects
Understanding the World
We will practise describing changes we see.
We will compare similarities and differences between people, animals, plants and objects.
We will learn to use the computer safely
We will practise using the mouse and touchscreens to explore games and programs
We will be learning about:

Expressive Arts and Design
We will practise: mixing different colours, painting for a purpose, painting recognisable shapes, adding detail to our paintings
We will explore malleable materials including clay and salt dough, learning how to use our hands and our tools to create different effects
We will learn to use a variety of materials to create models, exploring different ways to join them together
We will explore a variety of musical instruments and learn to sing some simple songs
